Advice on Controller / batteries etc

I am brand new to this game so require some advice on how to get started. I have a particular interest in warplanes, therefore I'm looking at purchasing the Spitfire, Focker Wolf or something in that vein. However, I also need advice on what batteries, controller and other accessories I need. 

Can someone please help with this, as I'm trying to buy something special for my 88-year-old uncles birthday.
